(NOTE: I originally planned to continue some comments on Pat Buchanan and his dire view of the future of the USA. I judged this subject to be more timely. I plan to present the Pat comments next time.)
MARTIN Luther was a terrible man who directly or indirectly was responsible for terrible things. The image of him primarily as a “religious reformer” is completely wrong. He set a tone for Protestants that involved personal and extreme attacks on the office of the Papacy and on the Pope himself, no matter who held the office. John Paul II had such good press that it was rather unfashionable to attack him. Perhaps this led to a type of pent up “debt.” Protestants, no matter how they feel, sentimentally, about an individual pope, are trained to hate the office, the concept, and, of course, the Church of Rome. This fact is related to the presidential election.
I hold that Bambam is going to be reelected. Not even his death will prevent it… well, maybe that might. However, maybe he is not as certain as I. Or, equally maybe, he wants to have some fun manipulating the American public. Lord knows he will not be required to do any real campaigning, as the Mass Media will do it for him. Nonetheless I see a brilliant political move on his part. It was his handling of the recent “Catholic contraception” issue.
Southerners and evangelicals are two groups that tend to contain the same people. They are somewhat conservative and thus should dislike Bambam and his policies. So if he can gain among them he shows how good a politician he is. Like a player scoring a touchdown---even an easy one---perhaps he wants to celebrate in an excessive way.
Bambam arranged things in such a way that even the weak sisters (pun intended) who are currently US Catholic bishops had to do something. They objected to a kind of (in)direct payment for contraceptive devices. Exactly what this was is not fully clear (at least not to me). But some bishops did object, somewhat. Some politicians (mostly Catholic) then supported their objection. The administration made some kind of withdrawal. This looked, to the world, as if the Church had won the fight and Bambam lost.
The reality is this. Bambam slapped the pope. This makes him popular with the evangelical Prots, who are the core of the Republican Party. Then he backed down, under open pressure from the Papists. This gave these same Prots the impression that the Vatican really DOES dictate to many (most?) American office holders. Trust me, a good many Prots really do believe that these guys got secret orders from their priests in the Confessionals. By losing Bambam confirmed their fears that the Vatican really is powerful and is still a very, very real danger to American freedom. Thus, if the Republicans nominate a Catholic, or even a Mormon, the Pope will be, in effect, the king.
Bambam has shown himself to be an enemy of the Papal conspiracy. So evangelical/fundamentalists may vote for him after all. This is especially likely as we begin to be overwhelmed with Mass Media coverage on how well the economy is doing, and see TV stories on happy and grateful individuals going back to work. In diplomacy one rule is that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Bambam has managed to use it in politics, and deceive almost everyone.
Of course, not being deceived is why you read this, isn’t it?

That was my take on it also. I did not think that it had anything to do with Contraception. It is so cheap to get a packet of pills, but it was more of a war on Catholics and also the few evangelical Christians who dont beleive in Contraception and Abortion. I didn't catch the slap the Vatican as much as I did a attempt at control over the churches and religion. A control issue .
