THE subject of race is again a current one. A number of pundits have observed that the Travon Martin killing attracted national media attention, while Black-on-White crimes---no matter how sensational---do not. One expert argued that the Liberal Media does not “feel comfortable” covering such stories. Another expert, namely I, concludes that the silence is a form of defense. I shall explain this reaction. It is all quite natural.
Pretty much everyone (but not I) holds that a criminal who desires a defense deserves a fair trial before any punishment. In fact, it is a foundation of our civilization that he be given a good and competent defense, with professional lawyers attacking the evidence and the victims of his crime. Justice by lynch mobs is considered something to be ashamed of. Officially we are supposed to consider everyone innocent until proven guilty, in court. Actually he is found guilty by jurors who sometimes say “we know that he was guilty, but the state did not prove it.” This principle of fairness is inherent in Western Civilization.
This principle of fairness extends far beyond the courts. For example, unions exist, among other reasons, to defend workers who would otherwise be punished. So incompetent teachers are kept on payrolls. And those who molest children are often defended by teacher unions, permitting them extra years of employment. As I write this a NFL football player is in jail awaiting a murder trial. His union is fighting for his pay, even though his team fired him. The unions, in such cases, would rather not perform these unpleasant tasks. But they have contractual obligations with their members. Fair is fair; and fair is following procedure. And often it is the guilty who are most in need of the most defense.
It is axiomatic that such “closing of ranks” is a natural thing. We humans seek solidarity and protection with other humans and therefore form associations. Once we are beyond the more basic link (i.e. family) we seek some similar criterion upon which to base membership. The very concept of the military is based upon the idea that being a part of the same unit (e.g. a shipmate) is an association so essential that it is worth dying for.
Thus this desire is inherent in humans because of our social nature. It is a law of sociology. Many, if not most, of us find this fulfilled in normal ways. These are nation, family, church, the army, charitable services, sometimes employment, etc. However, when these organizations are weak or absent the human heart seeks replacements. Among American Blacks the normal links are weak and/or the fundamental associations are often missing. To fulfill their need they suppose a racial association. Thus they declare that “Black is beautiful,” and “soul” really makes a person different, and that Blacks are automatically “brothers.”
The Liberal, also often lacking the basic links to enduring associations, identifies with this lack in the Black. He sees Blacks as handicapped. And people do not like to point out when the handicapped fail. Often it is not their fault. Thus they find the crimes and general misbehavior of the American Black to be uncomfortable.
